Know the early signs of Parkinson’s disease and how to deal with them for a better life. It is important to act early.

Parkinson’s disease is a progressive neurological disease that affects movement, coordination, and balance. This occurs due to the gradual loss of nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine, a chemical essential for smooth muscle control and coordination. One of the most commonly recognized early symptoms is tremor. This slight involuntary tremor begins in the hands, fingers, or limbs, especially at rest. Occasional tremors can be caused by stress, fatigue, or anxiety, but if they persist or get worse, they should not be ignored, as they may indicate an underlying neurological problem.

How can I stop Parkinson’s disease?

Dr. Satwant Sachdeva, Consultant, Department of Neurology, Manipal Hospital, Patiala, highlights that apart from tremors, Parkinson’s disease often presents with a variety of subtle early signs that develop gradually and can be mistaken for normal aging or lifestyle-related problems.

Other early signs to look out for:

  • Slowness of movement (bradykinesia), where daily tasks such as walking or getting dressed take longer than usual
  • Stiffness and stiffness in the muscles, especially in the arms, legs, and neck, can cause discomfort and reduced flexibility.
  • Changes in handwriting, such as letters becoming smaller or cramped (micrograph)
  • Communication may be difficult because your voice is small or low when you speak
  • Tendency to lose balance, become unstable frequently, or fall
  • Sleep disorders (including dream acting and restless sleep patterns)
  • Loss of the sense of smell (anosmia), which may appear years before other symptoms

How can I improve my quality of life with Parkinson’s disease?

Recognizing these symptoms early can make a big difference in managing the condition. Although Parkinson’s disease cannot be cured, timely diagnosis can better control symptoms and improve quality of life. Treatment usually focuses on managing symptoms and maintaining mobility and includes medications, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and lifestyle modifications such as regular exercise and a balanced diet.

What is deep brain stimulation DBS treatment?

In some cases, advanced treatment options such as deep brain stimulation (DBS) may be recommended to more effectively manage your symptoms. If you experience tremors or other unexplained changes in behavior, don’t ignore them. Early consultation with a neurologist can help initiate appropriate treatment, slow disease progression, and improve long-term outcomes.
