You may want to try different dating trends to spice up your love life, but not all of them will be good for you. Know all about text messaging and how to deal with it.

Emphasis is placed on communication to build and maintain healthy relationships. But what if your relationship is primarily based on text messages? Gen Z calls it “text communication.” This means a relationship limited to text communication only. In this type of relationship, you bond with the other person through text messages. You share small and large details of your life with that person. Even if your conversations deepen, your relationship will never go beyond text messages or meet in person. Does this mean this dating trend is unhealthy?

What is a text message?

This represents a modern form of relationship where two people maintain primarily text-based communication. They avoid or rarely participate in face-to-face interactions or voice calls. “This dynamic typically occurs when individuals form an emotional connection through a messaging app but, by choice or circumstance, do not proceed to a traditional date or in-person meeting,” explains psychotherapist and life coach Chandni Tughnait, Ph.D.

It provides emotional support and intellectual stimulation, but often lacks the depth of multisensory human interaction. In a 2014 study published in the journal Computers in Human Behavior, researchers found that sending too many text messages had a negative impact on relationship satisfaction.

What is text messaging?

Here are some of the main signs of texting.

1. Message-only communication pattern

This relationship is based almost exclusively on written messages, with a distinct reluctance to phone calls or video chats. “Even when a logical opportunity for voice communication arises (such as in an emergency or during an important discussion), there is a strong tendency to stick to text messages, often justified with excuses about convenience or comfort,” say experts.

2. Emotional depth that doesn’t require physical proximity

This relationship is characterized by deep emotional sharing and vulnerability through text messages, but there is a consistent pattern of avoiding in-person meetings. One or both may share personal struggles, dreams, and intimate thoughts, creating a closeness that only exists in the digital space.

3. Inconsistent engagement levels

A common pattern is one person carrying the weight of the conversation. They may start most discussions, ask personal questions, or suggest meeting. The other person responds with minimal effort or enthusiasm, but just enough to maintain the connection.

4. Late night intensity

In the case of text message exchanges, relationships tend to deepen late at night, with long, emotional conversations creating a temporary sense of intimacy. However, this usually does not carry over until the day, when interactions become more superficial or distant.

Texting ships provide a controlled environment for people with social anxiety or past relationship trauma to explore connection. Distance and time to develop a response can help increase confidence in expressing feelings and thoughts.

2. Schedule flexibility

This allows you to stay connected regardless of your busy schedule or different time zones. You can send and reply to messages at your convenience. This makes it easier to balance communication with other life commitments.

3. Thoughtful communication

“Texting allows you to carefully consider your response and think more deeply before replying to a message,” says Dr. Tugnight. This thoughtful form of communication can more clearly express complex emotions such as sadness and regret.

4. Digital records

People in this type of relationship keep a digital record of their conversations. A documented history of conversations that you can revisit. This helps people understand patterns in communication and relationship development.

Disadvantages of texting

The disadvantages of texting are:

1. Delay in emotional development

Texting hinders the development of important real-time social skills and emotional intelligence. These only occur when people engage in face-to-face interactions, rather than being limited to text message exchanges. It potentially inhibits your ability to build relationships.

2. False intimacy

When people text, a sense of intimacy is created through carefully chosen responses. This false intimacy leads to idealized versions of both people involved in this type of relationship. These versions may not match reality.

3. Avoidance pattern

Avoiding talking about important things with your romantic partner is bad for your relationship. “Texting can reinforce unhealthy avoidance patterns and prevent you from addressing underlying relationship fears and social anxieties,” experts say.

4. Limited sensory experience

There are words and emojis that can help you get your point across. But texting alone in relationships lacks the whole spectrum of human connection: physical presence, tone of voice, body language, and shared experiences. These are all essential for a deep bond.

5. Risk of time investment

Every relationship needs time to grow. “Considerable emotional energy and time can be consumed when texting, which could be better spent developing a more substantive face-to-face relationship,” experts say. Even if you’re not in a romantic relationship, time spent texting could be used for personal growth activities.

Is text messaging healthy?

“The psychological risks of texting typically outweigh the benefits to a healthy relationship,” experts say. According to a study published in Plos One in 2017, excessive use of smartphones for communication, including text messages, can cause anxiety. Another study published in Communication Studies in 2019 showed that face-to-face connections improve relationship quality over those based primarily on text messages.

From a mental health perspective, such digital-only connections can create a false sense of emotional security and exacerbate loneliness and isolation. “Message notifications temporarily stimulate dopamine (the happy hormone), but the release of oxytocin (the love hormone) that comes from physical presence and touch cannot be achieved,” experts say.

However, in certain situations, such as long-distance relationships or people dealing with social anxiety with professional guidance, a temporary text messaging stage can help build a more complete relationship. However, there must be a clear intention to progress beyond digital-only interactions.

How can I break free from texting?

If you wish, you can end this type of relationship by:

1. Be clear

Start by having an honest self-assessment discussion about your needs and motivations. “Recognize whether you’re holding on to texting out of convenience, fear, or genuine connection,” the experts say. This clarity will help strengthen your decision to make changes.

2. Go beyond the text

Take gradual but steady steps toward progress or conclusion. If you feel there is potential, directly express your desire to develop the relationship beyond text. Offer to have a voice call, video chat, or meet in person. Set clear timelines and expectations for this progress. If your opponent consistently avoids these steps, take this as a signal to move on.

3. Be honest about what you want

If you decide to end text messaging, communicate your decision clearly and kindly. “Avoid ghosting as it can leave you with unresolved feelings,” say experts. Send a thoughtful message explaining your position. For example, “I’ve always valued our conversations, but I’m looking for a relationship that includes a direct connection. It seems like we both have different expectations, so I think it’s best to move on.”

4. Create a border

After communicating your decision, create boundaries by reducing the available text. This might mean muting notifications, deleting message threads, and optionally deleting contacts. Focus on building direct connections through social activities and dating apps that emphasize face-to-face meetings.

It can hinder the development of important interpersonal skills needed to maintain meaningful long-term relationships. If you decide to stop texting, remember that it’s not about passing on responsibility.
