Why postpone happiness to the future when you can experience it in your daily life? If you’re a busy person, here are some ways you can learn to slow down.

“Once things calm down, I’ll take off on that long-awaited vacation,” or “I’ll finish reading the books on my TBR list,” or “Once life calms down a bit, I’ll start getting more excited about training” – have you ever said any of these to yourself in your daily life?These thoughts indirectly indicate a problem. That means you’re too busy to slow down and enjoy life. We keep pushing good things into the future, thinking that life will get easier and slower later. Unfortunately, slowing down in life doesn’t just happen. Achieving a balanced life doesn’t just happen by chance.

Life just keeps moving faster at its own pace, and we have to keep moving forward to keep up with that pace. If you are not careful, you will find that your entire life becomes a constant whirlpool of chaos, rushing from one thing to another. And when we get busy, we end up missing out on some of the best parts and moments of life. To avoid falling into this trap, understand how to slow down and why it’s important.

The importance of slowing down

Have you ever wondered why it’s important to slow down? Yes, continuing to live your life in the same fast-paced routine will eventually take a huge toll on your overall health, productivity, and relationships. However, if you prioritize reducing speed, you may be able to:

1. Focus on important aspects of life

If you live a chaotic life and never have free head space, you will lose sight of the things and people that are important to you. Slowing down gives you the mental space to clarify and stick to your priorities.

2. Maintain overall health

Living an overly busy life can lead to chronic stress, which harms your physical and mental health. Over time, you’re more likely to develop “rush sickness,” an anxiety disorder caused by the constant effort to squeeze one more thing into an already packed schedule. 3. Increase productivity

If you rush from one task to another without slowing down, you are more likely to make mistakes. You may also have to go back several times to redo tasks that were done correctly the first time. Slowing down frees up your mental space, allows your creativity to flow, and brings your best energy and mental focus to your work.

How to slow down?

Learning to slow down is not an easy task. Because it requires a lot of training. But when you stop feeling constantly overwhelmed, you feel like life has value. You will have to choose a different path than the rest of the world, and that may mean starting your life all over again. Here are some practical ways to learn the art of slowing down, from motivational counselor Roshan Mansukani.

1. Stop multitasking

One of the reasons we can’t slow down is because we divide our limited attention into a million things at once. We believe that multitasking is the only way to efficiently complete daily tasks. But in reality, it only makes us feel overwhelmed and stressed. Take on one thing at a time. Focus your attention and energy on one task and do your best to accomplish it. Not only will you learn to slow down, but you will also perform better in your personal and professional life.

2. Exist

That’s exactly right. Just be present wherever you are. Practice mindful living. But, of course, that’s easier said than done. With so many aspects of our daily lives competing for our attention, it can feel almost impossible to concentrate on what’s in front of us.

To improve your mindfulness skills, you can try deep breathing exercises or meditation to calm your mind. Identify your thought patterns and disconnect from distractions to live in the moment. You can also record your thoughts in a journal to clear the fog that is blocking your existence.

3. Put your phone aside

We’re all mostly dependent on our phones and the cheap dopamine we get from mindlessly scrolling through them. A constantly blinking cell phone screen makes us feel like we’re in a hurry because we have to constantly check it. News, social media, text messages, emails, and app notifications all distract us and keep us in a constant hurry. Learn how to put your phone aside and avoid using it in your life. Don’t give your phone so much power that it steals your peace of mind, attention, and time. Boundaries should be set for cell phone use, not the other way around.

You can also consider removing useless apps from your phone, such as social media, or turn off all notifications, leaving important notifications behind. You can also create a phone-free zone in your home so you can slow down and enjoy family time without distractions.

4. Focus on the people around you

When we try to achieve bigger dreams in life, we often put aside our beloved family and friends. As a result, we miss out on important relationships. We need to slow down and take time to spend quality time with our loved ones. When we become more connected, we become calmer and feel more peace in our lives.

5. Check the speed limit

It may sound silly, but you can learn to slow down by literally slowing down your car. Don’t drive too fast and force yourself to obey the speed limit. Slowing down your basic activities will help you transition to a slower pace of life in general. Something as simple as driving slowly can make you experience slowness not only on a physical level, but also mentally and emotionally.

6. Accept your weaknesses

Sometimes we put too much strain on ourselves, thinking it’s our job to save the world. We say yes to things we don’t want to pursue because we’re afraid the world will fall apart if we don’t show up.

Press pause and remember that the world keeps moving even if you’re not going anywhere. Don’t rush, take a nap instead. Accepting that you can’t do it all creates space for the rest you need. We are not machines, we are humans, always remember that.

7. Make time for fun

As we grow older, we tend to forget how to have fun and relax. We even feel guilty because we think it’s some kind of luxury we can’t afford. But we should slow down and try to enjoy the small moments that help recharge our batteries. Even if it’s just something as simple as laughing and connecting with loved ones, these moments can inject some much-needed joy into our busy lives.

Sign up for a baking class, travel, train for a race, play video games, or anything that brings you some tranquility. Whatever you find enjoyable, remember what you enjoyed doing as a child and make time for it.

8. Embrace silence

We’re all not very good at staying still. In a world full of noise and clutter, we lose connection with ourselves. What if you could stop and just be quiet about everything for a while? Try this: For a week, observe silence in your car. Don’t play podcasts, music, radio, just shut up. Over time, a sense of calm will develop in you and with practice it will become natural. You can also be intentional with your precious time and schedule time to create moments of silence.
