From probiotic drinks to antioxidant-rich green tea, here are seven healthy drinks to help maintain vaginal pH balance and reduce your risk of infection.
These days, the market is flooded with intimate care products that claim to improve vaginal odor, pH balance, and even skin tone. However, the vagina is a self-cleaning organ and maintains its balance naturally without the use of fancy or scented cleansers. Doctors say gentle hygiene and water are all that’s needed. In addition, even small changes to your diet can have surprising effects. Consider eating a balanced diet and staying properly hydrated with water and certain nutritious drinks. This helps maintain pH levels, supports healthy vaginal flora, and reduces the risk of infection and dryness.
Health Shots spoke to Dr Anitha David, consultant gynecologist at Hosmat Hospital, about healthy drinks that support vaginal health for overall intimate health.
7 healthy drinks for vaginal health
Here are some of the best drinks to maintain intimate hygiene and keep your pH levels balanced.
1. Plain water
Staying hydrated maintains the natural moisture of vaginal tissues and supports healthy mucous membranes. Dehydration causes dryness and inflammation, making you more susceptible to infections. Drinking enough water also helps eliminate toxins and maintains a healthy urinary tract and vaginal environment.
2. Unsweetened yogurt kefir
Probiotic-rich drinks like unsweetened yogurt kefir are a great addition to your daily diet. These contain Lactobacillus, the same beneficial bacteria found naturally in the vagina. These probiotics help restore healthy flora, especially after antibiotic use or recurrent infections. As Dr. David points out, probiotics are beneficial for women who suffer from bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections.
3. Pure cranberry juice (unsweetened)
Cranberry juice has long been known for its ability to reduce urinary tract infections (UTIs). According to a study published in Food Frontiers, cranberry juice contains vitamins, minerals such as calcium, and compounds that prevent harmful bacteria from attaching to the walls of the urinary tract. To ensure effectiveness without promoting yeast growth, choose pure versions that are low in sugar. It is an excellent option for women who are prone to recurring urinary tract infections.

4. Green tea
Green tea is not only good for your skin, but it also helps with vaginal health. Rich in antioxidants called catechins, green tea fights inflammation and supports your immune system. As highlighted in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, these catechins have antibacterial and antifungal properties that help maintain vaginal balance. Green tea is also rich in nutrients such as calcium and vitamins, which have a positive impact on menstrual and reproductive health.
5. Coconut water or buttermilk
Coconut water and buttermilk are both moisturizing and rich in electrolytes, which keep your body balanced and your vaginal tissues healthy. Fermented buttermilk also has mild probiotic benefits, improving digestion and microbial balance. Dr. David recommends these natural drinks to support daily hydration and vaginal health.
6. Fermented fruit smoothie
Homemade kefir or fermented fruit smoothies combine the benefits of probiotics and fiber. These drinks promote the growth of healthy bacteria while supporting digestion. However, it’s important to limit your sugar intake, as excess sugar feeds yeast and can upset your vaginal balance.
7. Fortified orange juice
Fortified orange juice contains nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, and folic acid, which are beneficial for reproductive and vaginal health. A study published in the journal Nutrients found that postmenopausal women who took vitamin D supplements for 12 weeks had improved vaginal health. Orange juice may not have the same benefits as supplements, but when taken in moderation, it can contribute to your overall health.
