SHARE

Yoga originates from yogis who discovered certain postures and positions that helped keep the body healthy, using the mind, body, and breath. Yogis also discovered that yoga mudras were incredibly effective and began incorporating them into all yoga practices.

Yoga mudras are basically simple hand gestures that activate the flow of energy within the body. Mudras are also often used in classical dance forms as a means of telling a story or clarifying emotions.

Yoga mudras are known to impart healing powers to the body to alleviate physiological and emotional ailments. It is known that using the right yoga mudras can help you lose excess weight and stay healthy.

Yoga has traditionally been practiced as a way to keep the body and mind healthy. Breathing techniques taught in yoga can help improve concentration and mindfulness. Although yoga has evolved over the years, its core remains true to Ayurveda.

In yoga, five elements are considered to be the central focus of the body: ‘Jal’ (water), ‘Prithvi’ (earth), ‘Akash’ (space), ‘Vayu’ (air) and ‘Agni’ (fire). Imbalances caused by these factors commonly result in disease and poor health. Yoga mudras help restore the balance between these elements and prepare you to fight future illnesses.

Here are some of the most effective yoga mudras that have been practiced and passed down through generations.

These mudras are known to help heal chronic illnesses and improve a person’s overall mental health. These mudras are known to accelerate the weight loss process and help people achieve good health and fitness.

1. Surya Agni Mudra

surya mudra

Surya mudra or agni mudra as it is traditionally known represents the element of fire. Performing this mudra activates the fire energy in the body and helps restore the balance of fire. When you perform mudras, your fingers form connections that facilitate the flow of energy within your body.

During the weight loss process, some people find it difficult to lose fat due to poor digestive health. The fire element present in Surya mudra is known to improve digestion by increasing metabolism in the body. If practiced regularly, it will greatly help in fat loss.

Surya Mudra can be performed in the comfort of your home. First, sit upright with your back straight. Move your ring finger towards your palm and align it with your thumb. Place your hands on your thighs and knees and remain seated in this position.

During this time, you can do breathing exercises and meditation. Surya Mudra is performed for 45 minutes every day, with a 15 minute interval between each period. Surya mudra brings more benefits if practiced early in the day.

2. Kapha Nashak Mudra

The three temperaments of the body are known as Vayu, Kapha, and Pitta. Kapha and Pitta elements represent fire and earth respectively, and Vayu represents air. Pitta element in the body represents fire and is known to promote metabolism in the body. The Kapha element represents Earth and too much of it can indicate excess weight in the body.

Kapha Nashak Mudra aims to remove excess Kapha elements from the body and restore balance between all other elements. Kapha Nashak Mudra improves the functioning of the digestive system by promoting metabolic activity through the production of fire.

To perform Kapha Nashak mudra, you should sit in a comfortable position with your eyes closed. Bend your ring finger and little finger toward your palm and connect them with your thumb. Apply as much pressure as is comfortable for you and maintain this position.

To feel the full effect of the mudra, you should practice this mudra for 30 to 45 minutes every day, repeating for 15 minutes.

3. Linga Mudra

yoga poses

Linga mudra is also commonly known as Lord Shiva mudra. Yoga is so deeply intertwined with the religions of Hinduism and Buddhism that many believe that God practices yoga and meditation. Linga mudra is an effective mudra to channelize inner conflicts.

Linga Mudra symbolizes the victory of the positive over the negative. Practicing this mudra awakens the fire within the body and generates energy that energizes the organs. The digestive system is activated and energy flows to balance intestinal issues. Linga mudra helps in weight loss by improving the body’s metabolism. The heat generated in this mudra inhibits the growth of a toxic substance called ama, which is known to cause fat accumulation in the body.

To perform Linga Mudra, you must first sit in a comfortable position with your legs crossed. Close your eyes to improve your concentration and avoid distractions. Next, interlace the fingers of both hands and press your palms together. Remember to keep your left thumb vertical.

It is recommended to practice this mudra for 20-30 minutes every day. Increasing the pressure on your palms will generate more heat and intensify the effects of this mudra.

4. Vayan Mudra

Vayan mudra is a mudra that is closely associated with the element of air. The body needs to rejuvenate itself with the properties of air that help improve the nervous system in the body. Vaayan mudra, when practiced correctly, is known to help people become more self-aware and practice higher levels of consciousness. With awareness, you can easily control your weight and lose fat effectively.

To perform Vaayan mudra, you need to sit on the floor in a safe and ventilated space. To begin the process, keep your spine erect and your eyes closed. Bend your index and middle fingers toward your palm and connect them with your thumb.

Hold this position with light pressure. To feel the positive effects of Vayan Mudra, practice this posture for 15 to 20 minutes daily.

5. Gyan Mudra

Gyan mudra, as its Sanskrit name suggests, is also known as knowledge mudra. Gyan mudra is meant to be practiced in parallel with other yoga postures and breathing techniques.

Gyan Mudra is known for increasing mental focus and allowing physical and mental functions to flow better. Gyan Mudra is also known to help people who suffer from irregular sleep and promote a natural and healthy sleep cycle in the body. Lack of sleep is thought to be a major cause of weight gain. Gyan mudra gives your body the rest it needs, boosts your metabolism and helps you shed excess weight.

During the process of practicing yoga mudras, it is important to maintain a positive mindset in order to reap the full benefits of these age-old traditions.

To practice Gyan Mudra, you need to sit on the floor, preferably with your legs crossed. Straighten your back and close your eyes. Next, while keeping your other fingers extended, place the tip of your index finger and the tip of your thumb together.

6. Prana Mudra

The word “Prana” means “life”. Prana Mudra essentially means “Mudra of Life”. This mudra has an advantage because it is believed to represent life itself. Prana mudra helps an individual to activate the energy within the body and enable the organs to function efficiently. Practicing prana mudra regularly activates the root chakra, allowing energy to flow smoothly throughout the body. Prana Mudra provides best results when performed in conjunction with Pranayama.

To perform Prana Mudra, sit cross-legged on the floor. To improve your concentration, stand tall and close your eyes. Mudras are to be performed with both hands.

Connect the tip of your thumb, ring finger, and little finger, and repeat with your other hand. Hold the position for 20 to 25 minutes to feel the effects of prana mudra.

In addition to performing these mudras, you should also make some other lifestyle changes to activate the effects of these mudras and aid in the weight loss process. Here are some tips to follow –
