Do you feel swollen or bloated? A yoga guru shares easy yoga poses that can help reduce water retention and relieve digestive discomfort naturally.

Have you ever woken up feeling unusually heavy, swollen, or bloated even though you didn’t overeat the night before? That uncomfortable bloating could be caused by water retention. Fluid retention is often caused by hormonal changes, high salt intake, dehydration, poor circulation, and a sluggish digestive system. It’s common to feel uncomfortable, tired, and anxious about your body.

Rather than looking for a quick fix, yoga offers a gentle and effective way to support your body’s natural detox and drainage systems. Certain yoga poses stimulate lymph flow, improve circulation, aid digestion, and help expel excess fluid and trapped gas. Alooshi Agarwal, certified nutritionist and yoga instructor, explains that with consistent practice, you can restore balance and reduce bloating naturally.

7 yoga poses to reduce water retention and swelling

Slow movements combined with conscious breathing also calm the nervous system, which plays a key role in digestion and fluid balance, says Agarwal. Here are 7 yoga poses that will help you.

1. Pawanmuktasana (wind-relieving pose)

This pose gently massages the abdominal organs, releasing trapped gas and reducing bloating. It also supports digestion and reduces abdominal pressure.

procedure: Lie on your back, bend your knees, and hug your chest. Hold for 30-40 seconds while breathing deeply.

2. Viparita Kalani (leg up on wall pose)

Excellent for reducing swelling in the legs and feet by improving venous return and lymphatic flow. It also relaxes the nervous system.

procedure: Lie on your back and extend your legs up toward the wall. Relax for 2 to 5 minutes with slow breathing.

3. Malasana (yoga squat)

Stimulates digestion, improves bowel movements, reduces abdominal bloating and fluid retention around the hips and lower abdomen.

procedure: Squat down with your feet flat, palms together, and elbows lightly pressed into your knees. Press and hold for 30 seconds.

4. Bungasana (cobra pose)

This pose stretches the abdomen, increases the digestive fire, and reduces gas and heaviness in the stomach.

procedure: Lie on your stomach, place your palms under your shoulders, and lift your chest while keeping your elbows slightly bent.

5. Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward-Facing Dog)

Gentle compression of the abdomen improves circulation, supports lymphatic drainage and reduces bloating.

procedure: Lift your hips upward to form an inverted V shape. Hold for 30 to 60 seconds while breathing steadily.

6. Ardha Matsyendrasana (spinal half twist)

Twist poses stimulate digestion, reduce bloating, and help drain excess fluid.

procedure: Sit upright, twist your torso to one side, and hold while breathing deeply. Repeat on the other side.

7.U. Bridge Piva)

It activates abdominal organs, improves blood circulation, supports hormonal balance and reduces fluid retention.

procedure: Lie on your back, bend your knees, lift your hips upwards and hold for 20 to 30 seconds.

Tips to make yoga more effective

For best results, Agarwal recommends practicing these poses on an empty stomach or at least three to four hours after eating. Combine yoga with plenty of hydration, low salt intake, and careful eating. Try not to hold your breath during the pose and listen to your body.
