Colds and coughs are common in winter, but you can reduce your risk by changing your diet. Avoiding some common foods and drinks during the winter months can help protect your throat, immune system, and digestion.

Winter brings cozy blankets, hot drinks, and festive meals, but it also brings with it a surge in colds, coughs, and throat infections. Most people blame the weather, but what you eat in winter can secretly affect your immune system, digestion, and respiratory health. Certain foods can increase mucus production, irritate the throat, and weaken digestion, making your body more vulnerable to infections. This doesn’t mean you need to follow a strict diet, but it helps to be aware of what you should limit. Avoiding certain foods and drinks during cold weather can reduce inflammation, support your immune system, and lower your risk of getting frequent colds and coughs.

Foods and drinks to avoid in winter

Reduce your intake of these 10 foods and drinks this season.

    1. excess caffeine

Tea and coffee may feel comforting in the winter, but too much caffeine can dehydrate your body. Internist Dr. Manjusha Agarwal explains, “Dehydration dries out the throat and nasal passages, making it easier for viruses to take hold. Excess caffeine disrupts sleep and weakens the immune system over time.”

2. Alcohol

Alcohol reduces your body’s ability to fight infections and dries out your throat. It can also worsen airway inflammation, making coughing and nasal congestion worse. Limiting alcohol during the winter months can help keep your immune system strong.

3. Fried food

Fried snacks are heavy, oily, and difficult to digest. Indigestion can weaken your immune system, and excess oil can increase mucus production, which can worsen coughs and chest congestion.

4. Banana

“While bananas are good for your health, they can increase mucus production in some people, especially during cold weather,” says Dr. Agarwal. If you already have respiratory problems, this can make your runny nose, throat irritation, and cough worse.

5. Melon (watermelon and cantaloupe)

Melon has a cooling effect on the body and contains a lot of water. In winter, digestion slows down, phlegm production increases, and cold symptoms can worsen.

6. Coconut water

Coconut water has a hydrating and cooling effect. Drinking frequently in winter can interfere with digestion and make you more susceptible to colds and coughs, especially for people with weak immune systems.

7. Citrus fruits (excess)

Citrus fruits such as oranges and sweet limes are rich in vitamin C, but too much in the winter can irritate the throat and cause coughing in sensitive people. Moderation is key.

8. Salty and sweet foods

Excess sugar can weaken your immune response, and too much salt can dry out your throat and sinuses. Packaged snacks, sweets, and desserts should be limited to reduce the risk of frequent infections.

9. Cold drinks

Cold drinks can shock the mucous membranes of your throat, triggering coughing and increasing mucus production. In winter, it’s a good idea to drink hot water, herbal tea, or soup instead of cold drinks.

10. Excess dairy products

Eating milk, cheese, and cream can thicken mucus and worsen nasal congestion and coughing in some people. “If you notice an increase in phlegm after consuming dairy products, it’s best to limit your intake during the winter months,” suggests Dr. Agarwal.
